California Boater Card
Now in Effect As of January 1st 2019, California's mandatory boating safety education law went into effect for persons 20 years older or younger. If you are 20 or younger and operate any type of motorized vessel on California waterways (including powered sailboats/paddlecraft), you are required to pass an approved boating safety examination and carry a lifetime California Boater Card.
Starting January 1st 2019, the age requirement will apply to boaters 25 years old or younger, and will increase yearly after that until 2025 when everyone will have to have the card regardless of age. There are a few exceptions, but since there is a potential fine for the boater not complying (and his/her parents or guardian), we highly recommend visiting the California Boater Card official website to review the specific requirements.

Vessel Inspections
An annual inspection by either the Coast Guard Auxiliary or the US Power Squadron is a great tool! Although it is not required, it gives you information about compliance of your vessel. Even a regular boater sometimes overlooks items such as Flares (the do expire!) and updated placard requirements and of course you never know your navigation lights are out, until you need them! The inspections are free and if there is a deficiency, there is no penalty whereas if stopped by the Coast Guard a deficiency can result in a ticket! Also, while not a 100% guarantee, but if you have a current sticker on your windshield, your chances of being stopped by Coast Guard drop greatly. This is a good time of the year to get this done.
